Yaz Plus is a combination oral contraceptive, commonly referred to as birth control pills. It contains two active ingredients: ethinylestradiol (a synthetic estrogen) and drospirenone (a synthetic progestin). These hormones work together to prevent pregnancy by inhibiting ovulation, thickening the cervical mucus, and altering the lining of the uterus.
Dosage:
Yaz Plus comes in a pack containing 28 tablets. Each pack is divided into 4 different sections, with each section containing a specific type of tablet:
- 24 light yellow tablets: Each tablet contains 3 milligrams of drospirenone and 0.02 milligrams of ethinylestradiol.
- 4 white tablets: Each tablet contains 3 milligrams of drospirenone.
The tablets are taken once daily, preferably at the same time each day, for 28 consecutive days. It is important to follow the prescribed order of the tablets as indicated on the pack, starting with the light yellow tablets and then taking the white tablets.
Usage:
Yaz Plus is primarily used as a contraceptive method to prevent pregnancy. When taken correctly and consistently, it is highly effective in preventing pregnancy, with a failure rate of less than 1%.
In addition to contraception, Yaz Plus may also provide other benefits such as more regular and lighter menstrual periods, reduced risk of developing certain types of ovarian and endometrial cancers, and improvement in acne symptoms.
To start using Yaz Plus, it is recommended to begin taking the first light yellow tablet on the first day of your menstrual cycle (the first day of your period). Alternatively, your healthcare provider may advise you to start on the first Sunday after your period starts. It is important to use an additional form of contraception (such as condoms) during the first 7 days of starting Yaz Plus to ensure effective contraception.
If you miss a pill, follow the instructions provided in the package insert or consult with your healthcare provider. It may be necessary to use backup contraception or take additional tablets to compensate for the missed dose.
It’s important to note that Yaz Plus does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Therefore, the use of condoms or other barrier methods is recommended for STI prevention.
Before starting Yaz Plus or any other birth control pill, it is important to consult with a healthcare provider who can evaluate your medical history and determine if it is a suitable contraceptive option for you. They can provide personalized instructions and guidance on proper usage and address any concerns or potential side effects you may experience.
