Pyridium is a medication that is used to relieve the pain, burning, urgency, and discomfort caused by urinary tract infections (UTIs) and other conditions affecting the lower urinary tract. The active ingredient in Pyridium is phenazopyridine, which works by numbing the lining of the urinary tract.
Dosage:
The usual dose of Pyridium is one 100mg tablet taken three times a day, with or after meals. The maximum daily dose should not exceed 600mg. The duration of treatment is usually 2 days, but it can be extended to up to 3 days, as prescribed by the doctor.
Usage:
Pyridium should only be used for symptomatic relief of pain and discomfort caused by UTIs and other conditions affecting the urinary tract. It should not be used as a substitute for antibiotic treatment or to prevent UTIs. Patients with kidney or liver disease, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, or a history of methemoglobinemia should use Pyridium with caution.
It is recommended to drink plenty of fluids while taking Pyridium to help flush bacteria out of the urinary tract. Pyridium may cause the urine to turn reddish-orange, which is a normal and harmless effect of the medication.
If symptoms do not improve after 2-3 days of treatment or if fever or other symptoms develop, patients should contact their doctor. Pyridium should be stored at room temperature and kept away from heat, moisture, and light.
